DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- The demand for drug-addiction treatment programs is growing faster than resources in Dutchess County, state lawmakers and addiction experts told The Poughkeepsie Journal.

Dutchess County lawmakers and drug-addiction experts say more treatment options are needed to help people addicted to heroin or other opioids, The Poughkeepsie Journal says.

The Journal is taking a look at the heroin crisis through a series of articles leading up to a public forum Wednesday on the issue in Poughkeepsie. While state lawmakers have tried to boost treatment options, experts say more needs to be done, The Poughkeepsie Journal says.

One expert called this an "unprecedented epidemic." With 20 or more deaths from opioid addiction from 2009-13, Dutchess County leads the state with a rate of 5.5 for every 100,000 people, The Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

The total number of opioid-related deaths statewide between 2010 and 2014 was 5,860, up from 2,931 deaths for 2003-07, according to The Poughkeepsie Journal.
